Amid the in-depth "dual carbon" strategy and booming natural gas heavy-duty truck market, the commercial vehicle power sector embraces a key green transformation opportunity. Recently, the 2025 5th Customer Advisory Committee of Cummins Power Chain Academy was held in Chengdu, where Cummins and leading logistics decision-makers exchanged views on green power trends, operational needs and product solutions, jointly exploring efficient low-carbon paths for heavy-duty truck power to inform the upgrading of Cummins' core products like truck and natural gas engines. Backed by improved gas infrastructure, favorable gas prices and growing demand for efficient logistics, high-horsepower natural gas heavy-duty trucks have shifted from "optional" to "preferred" for major transportation scenarios. Diesel engines also see rising energy-saving upgrade demand, with users valuing Cummins automotive engines' performance, reliability and lifecycle cost, driving product upgrades from "usable" to "easy-to-use, cost-effective and durable".
Customer Voice: The Compass for Cummins Power Innovation
For Cummins, "customer-centricity" is core to defining and upgrading products like truck and natural gas engines. At the meeting, "green transformation", "working condition adaptation" and "cost control" were key topics. Core customers including Anneng Logistics noted scenario-specific needs: high climbing power and low gas consumption for southwest mountain transport, and low-temperature reliability of natural gas engines for northwest trunk lines, expecting Cummins to launch tailored power solutions. These differentiated needs are integrated into the early R&D of Cummins' truck and natural gas engines as a core basis for product definition. Zheng Xiangyun, Director of Cummins China Terminal and Sales Support, emphasized that customer voices guide power innovation, including natural gas heavy-duty truck optimization and diesel engine energy-saving upgrades. He also shared truck industry trends, Cummins Power Chain Academy's phased achievements, and fleet cost-reduction solutions covering the operation, maintenance and value improvement of natural gas and diesel engines.
Leading New Product: Cummins 16N Natural Gas Engine Empowers Efficient Operation of Heavy-Duty Trucks

To address customers' core concerns including operational economy, vehicle attendance and maintenance costs, Cummins launched the new 16N high-horsepower natural gas engine. As a flagship product of Cummins' automotive engine lineup, it integrates six core advantages—powerful, efficient, reliable, intelligent, safe and protective—tailored for natural gas heavy-duty truck efficient operations, further solidifying Cummins' leading position in the heavy-duty truck power sector. With a planned maximum power of 720hp and 3600Nm torque, it easily handles complex conditions like mountain climbing and heavy loads. Boasting a 2% higher maximum thermal efficiency than the previous generation, it adopts advanced technologies such as a strong tumble combustion system and variable valve timing, achieving 4% gas savings under cyclic conditions; combined with Cummins Smart Brain 3.0 (CBM3.0) and intelligent accessories, it further reduces gas consumption by 2%, resulting in a total vehicle gas saving of 6% and significantly lowering operating costs.
In terms of reliability and attendance, the 16N engine offers flexible maintenance cycles: 300,000/100,000km for valve clearance adjustment and 150,000/100,000km for oil changes, reducing maintenance frequency and boosting vehicle attendance. Equipped with Smart Brain 3.0, it enables in-depth interaction between the engine, gearbox and after-treatment system, intelligently selecting gears to match the optimal economic zone for more efficient power output. For safety, it provides up to 400kW braking power, enhancing driving safety and comfort. The upgraded intelligent diagnostic system can accurately identify over 85% of faults in three steps, shifting from passive to proactive service and minimizing users' maintenance costs and downtime losses.
Co-creation and Empowerment: Cummins Joins Hands with Customers to Explore New Opportunities in the Heavy-Duty Truck Power Industry

The customer co-creation session of this event gathered practical industry wisdom. Leaders from Kunming Oriental Express Service Co., Ltd., Baotou Yuli Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. and Hubei Chengli Automobile Group, combining their practical experience in the heavy-duty truck transportation and manufacturing fields, brought wonderful sharing on the application and co-creation opportunities of Cummins power in Southeast Asian cross-border transportation, the adaptation trend analysis of aluminum alloy electric trailers and natural gas heavy-duty trucks/diesel heavy-duty trucks, and the co-creation model of Cummins automotive engines in the special vehicle field, bringing new industry perspectives to the guests present.
This kind of co-creation and exchange based on real operational scenarios not only opened up new ideas for the participants in the field of heavy-duty truck power, but also provided practical references in resource integration, path optimization, product customization and other aspects, helping enterprises seize opportunities in the transformation of energy and power upgrading in the heavy-duty truck industry. To further build a more open and continuous customer communication mechanism, at the event site, Suo Guotao, Chief Engineer of Cummins China Engine Business Unit, and Zheng Xiangyun, Director of Cummins China Terminal Market Sales and Support, jointly awarded "Key Opinion Leader (KOL)" appointment letters to a number of influential terminal customer representatives, aiming to continuously listen to customer voices and deepen co-creation and cooperation in core fields such as truck engines and natural gas engines.
Suo Guotao, Chief Engineer of Cummins China Engine Business Unit, said: "Customers are the most important partners on Cummins' development path. Whether it is the innovative breakthrough of natural gas heavy-duty truck power or the iterative upgrading of diesel engines, it is inseparable from the in-depth participation of customers.
